Thanks for the suggestion. It could be that, it does seem to make sense in some ways.

The one thing that would seem to count against this is that there are two other partitions -- sda5 (ext4, /home) and sda2 (HFS+, MacOS X partition) -- which it should be able to mount (albeit read-only in the latter case) and are clean, but are not automatically mounted. I was able to manually mount sda5 easily.

I'll have to google this when I get a chance. I'd like to avoid messing with the disk until I actually know what's wrong, so I'll see if I can figure out another method...
