check disk space: df
restart dpkg configuration: dpkg --configure -a
re-do configuration: ssu dpkg-reconfigure gnome-power-manager
reinstall it: sudo apt-get --reinstall install gnome-power-manager
reinstall the desktop: sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop
