I'm fairly out of touch with Ubuntu and Gnome so take what I say
with a grain of salt...

You could possibly fix this by removing your
gnome configuration, which will be rebuilt when you log in, though you
may have to re-configure some applications. So if you move (don't
delete) your /home/[user name]/.gnome/ directory to somewhere else and
then attempt to log in, it should create fresh configuration.

If that
doesn't work I'd try to reinstall gnome - sudo apt-get install
--reinstall ubuntu-desktop

To get to the command line from the login
prompt you can start a "safe session" or something from a menu at the
login screen - or press ctrl + alt + F3 to get to a terminal. I haven't
used Ubuntu in a while so I am not sure of the exact steps to get a
terminal from login screen.
