Wow I really didn't read the original email properly!

A really easy way to get basic sharing, as Russell said, is to use SFTP.
SFTP is just done through the SSH daemon which (most of the time, and
not on Ubuntu) is installed by default but does not start on boot by
default. Once started and port 22 opened you can just use a SFTP
client on Windows.

There are also GUI tools for configuring SAMBA (though I have never
use them myself). In Red Hat based distributions you can install
"system-config-samba" use YaST in SuSE... I can't remember whatever
the hell Ubuntu has. Configuring smb.conf by hand is quite easy but
there is fair bit of useless information to wade through for a
beginner.

I have found the sharing functions through Nautilus dodgy so just set
up Samba directly and save yourself the worry of wondering if it is
actually working.
