G'day Sandra, thanks for replying.

I had assumed it is because it /is/ reading the cd to get the boot menu.  I
haven't used that cdrom much because the old server was running fine for so
long.  I could try another I guess.

Because I had tried the old hdd to boot from, and 2 different boot cd's I had
assumed it wasn't bad media.

I'll try tonight, although the gentoo cd I tried is a live cd IIRC.
