Two options.  One is that the Debian install CD, and I
presume Ubuntu as well accept options on the boot
command line that turn off various parts of the
hardware detection process.  Turn them all of and
see how far you get.

Secondly, Knoppix and the like come with memtest86+.
Run it overnight.
