Not much help but,
My brother recently got a cheap netgear or dlink adsl modem/router, it
exhibits the same behaviour.

It works fine with windows and macosx, boot a live cdrom or hdd
installed linux, get a lease and get stopped dead in the tracks....

Firmware upgrade did diddelly squat. As it was setup up the coast, I
didn't get much time to investigate further.

Cheers,
Marco
