I'm running Google ads as a 'test' on AusImages
(http://www.ausimages.com), which is just a little play site I set up to
tinker with.
I found at first that the Google ad stuff worked really well - even on
pages which only had a few words it picked up the keywords and delivered
ads relevant to the content. For example,
http://www.ausimages.com/view/2005-02-24/52225212MH009_Dubai_Tennis022211_1024x768.jpg
was delivering ads for Dubai hotels. Pretty neat.
However, at some point it seems to have almost stopped working
entirely - now I seem to only be getting ads for Subaru related products
and I have no idea why :) I haven't spent any time looking at it (not
looking to make money off it or anything, it was just an experiment) -
I don't know if I changed the page layout or the way the content was
displayed or if its something I need to configure in the Google admin
thing.
In any case - its dead easy and quick to sign up with Google ads so
they're certainly a good place to start. I think you need to be getting
in the zillions of users coming to your site before you're going to
start seeing any green though :) However, many of the sites I visit have
abandoned their old ads in favour of Google ads, so I think they must be
doing something right.
