Hi Michael,

Update to my earlier message...

1) when looking at the query and server settings, apart from table stats
(i.e. # of rows in each table etc) we'd also need to know the table
structure, SHOW CREATE TABLE ... is generally best.

2) It has been pointed out to me that you can find open files with lsof,
e.g. "lsof | grep mysqld | grep tmp", in addition with the other stuff,
may help us find and resolve the cause of the problem.
