Since it's for your desktop and not a super-security requiring server, I'd go 
for recompiling the latest kernel yourself. In Debian you can use the 
make-kpkg command which compiles the kernel then creates a deb file for you 
to dpkg -i 

If you're really game you could try 2.6.5 but the latest 2.4 would be fine.
