The standard debian install should support pcmcia fine.
I've installed debian on several laptops, and I don't remember it ever
being particularly difficult. I always do netinst since I have a
local apt-proxy cache.
There's a 180mb cd image called 'bonzai(sic) linux' (STFW) which is an
install disk for a cut-down debian with kde. I installed it on a dell
pIII about 5 months ago with no problems, so maybe try that?
