Using software raid with linux it pretty straight forward with just an
ordinary ide controller card (they are much cheaper too!). I have had no
troubles with this setup. As for ide raid controllers, I have only ever
used Promise FastTrak100 TX2, but the driver they supply only works with
certain Redhat and Suse kernels. I have used this particular card in
several machines without any problems. What I have also found useful is
that with the way the card mirrors the drive, I can take out a drive and
plug it straight into another machine and it can be seen as a nornal
hard drive, with all the data.

There are also several ide raid cards listed in the kernel, although
they are listed as experimental. Cards are the Promise FastTrak Series,
the Highpoint 370 software raid, and the Silicon Image Medley software
raid. Don't know how you will go with them, a google search on groups
might reveal more info,

cheers

Johann
