Going on past experience, I'm going to guess that smoothwall uses pump as it's 
dhcp client.  I had trouble and I know others have as well using pump on 
Optus.  Installed the ISC dhcp client and all was happy.  I can't explain why 
this was the case as it doesn't make sense.
