If you're using RPMs, DEBs or some other precompilled packages, than
either should be fine.
I prefer KDE, having used it since v1.0 (Gnome at the time ran slow and
klunky on my P133 system), although Gnome is still quite nicely done.
Between the two of them, I've found KDE much nicer to compile from
source. To get a working KDE installation from source, you need only
download & install about 8 packages:
- libpng, libjpeg6b, libtiff & friends
- Qt
- libpcre
- arts (KDEs sound daemon)
- kdelibs
- kdebase
Gnome, however, is a different story. From what I've seen, there's no
definate list of packages mentioned anywhere that you need to download
to get a minimalist install. At least, it's not very clear to me.

This has been my experience. I tend to prefer to use Gnome-Terminal as
a console rather than KDE's Konsole (fonts just seem to play nicer the
former) although most of the apps I use are KDE's apps, with the
exception of OpenOffice & Mozilla.
