This is somewhat akin to what bootable CD distros such as Knoppix do. I
believe that LTSP also does a similar thing. Basically they have
everything you need plus the kitchen sink compiled as modules and a nice
program/script that runs while starting the system. This program is
able to identify all your hardware (well, any hardware that it knows
about at least) and load the correct drivers for that hardware. IIRC,
this is done with a file that contains a large map of PCI codes to
drivers required for that hardware. For more details of how it's done
have a poke around in the LTSP od Knoppix packages.
