Sure. The kernel is largely modular. Most distros make their kernels as
modular as possible, so you'll just need to install the distro and use
whatever methods they normally use to detect hardware configuration.
There are varius mechamisms for auto-loading modules as needed (kmod) or
for forcing the load of a particular module at boot time if that is better
(/etc/modules).
I have read the next stable series of the kernel will be fully modular
(Solaris style) so the idea of having anything except basic functionality
as anything but a module won't exist.
