Modern monitors report their capability to modern vid cards when suitably
interrogated. ie when using XFree 4.x.
Consequently the mode-lines are able to be generated on the fly but that
takes time.
Google for "read-edid" for some technical discussion on it.
Must admit that I hate any discussion that explodes our conspiracy theories
though.
