Before I respond to Robert, first a general comment about Unix. One
of its great advantages is that you can *fix* it when it breaks. The
Other Operating System relies on an undocumented maze of binary-format
configuration data and secret file formats, such that "wipe and
re-install" is pretty much the only solution to many problems.
Completely aside from issues of source code openness or ideological
purity (*snicker*), the ability to repair a running system without
reinstall (or often without even having to reboot) is a major
advantage of Unix.

There's a document from Elder Days floating around the 'net called the
"Unix Horror Stories List" which is a collection of anecdotes about
recovery from system administration mistakes. Some people have
pulled off truly amazing recoveries from what at first seemed like
certain disaster (eg. recovery from total erasure of /bin and /etc
without needing to reboot).

Robert Brockway <robert at timetraveller.org> moved upon the face of the 'Net and spake thusly:

So you run what, a 30 day cycle, (or is it based on calendar months)?
