[H-GEN] File system encryption

A few years ago I installed/played with a file encyption system under 
Windows.

The basic steps were:
1. Create and encrypt a largeish file.
2. Use the software and password to 'mount' the file as a drive.
3. Use the drive as you would a normal drive.

The largeish file could be a straight encrypted file, it could also be a 
sound file (can't remember if it was wave or something else)

The file would actually play, but amongst it would be your encrypted 
data. I think it it did it by reducing the sample rate from say 16bit to 
  8bit and using the 'freed' 8bits for your data.

Does anyone know of something similar that works for *nix.
