Some people think you should dismantle them and use the pretty
things inside as playthings, but your solution was probably
equally satisfying.

The generic answer is to look in /sys/i386/conf/LINT for the
example relating to the thing you're interested in and see what
it shows. If needed, cut and paste from LINT into your own
config file.

Some things need to be included in the kernel; many work as
modules that will be compiled in any case and dumped in the
modules directory when you install the kernel. From there, they
will be autoloaded. The precise situation depends on the item
in question -- for this case, I don't have the answer at hand
but you should be able to figure it out from the above info.

If that fails, try searching the FreeBSD web site, in any of the
documentation links, and you should get more information. The
other good source of help with general FreeBSD questions is the
freebsd-questions at freebsd.org mailing list.

It's always worth asking questions, although it's often faster
to find the answers for yourself -- the trick is learning how to
find them and that's something we can help with. If you can get
to a meeting, that's also often a useful way of getting quite a
bit of stuff covered in one session.
