I installed kde and that is working fine, so that pretty much tells me 
its something to do with gnome.  I'm sure I've read somewhere that gnome 
on redhat 8.0 is a little buggy. Well at least if gnome is giving me 
hassles, I can choose another window manger. I quite like gnome, but I 
think I will kde another go, at least they are both similar on redhat 8.0.
