Hi all,
I have set up a redhat 8.0 box, with the lastest updates. I
changed the hostname and ipaddress details using the redhat network
configuration tool and now when I try to login back in I can't. I'm
using gnome, and it'll get to the first splash screen thats shows the
various bits starting up (although none of those services are started)
and it just seems to hang. I saw a log somewhere that said something to
the effect that x-windows could not find a server to connect too.
Unfortunately I can't find this log entry again. However I thought maybe
is was an access problem, so I set "xhost +" to allow all, however
all I got back was 'xhost: unable to open display "" ' and further
when I log on at console, I get "last login: ... on :0 " which is not
right either. Now if I change the hostname to something stupid, that
can't be looked up, gnome complains at startup, I click continue, and
the gnome doesn't proceed anymore. I can login using the fail safe mode
(twm I think), so I am guessing its unlikely to be a x-windows config
problem (and I have tried reconfiguring the XFre86 config file) so I am
thinking it is likely to be more of a gnome config problem. I have no
other window manager installed at the moment. If I switch to run level 3
and just type X, I get the x-server up and running okay. I have seen
this on another machine I have, that I was using, but I ended up
re-installing, so I do not think it is hardware specific. I tried to
re-install most of the core gnome files to no avail. I also tried
setting the hostname back to the orginal name that I had entered when I
first set the box, but this has not helped either.
any ideas would be appreciated
thanks
Johann
