It may be a problem with gnome, I'm not sure. I've had rh8.0
running gnome without any problems like that.

I know you have it "working", but do this anyway...

Put /etc/hosts into your editor and make sure that the line for
  127.0.0.1 resolves exactly like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost hostname.mydomain.com.au hostname

Substitute "hostname.mydomain.com.au" and "hostname" with whatever
you are using for your box's hostname and fqdn.

The order is also important... subtle differences occur if you put
the "localhost.localdomain" entries at the end of the line.

You may then have another line specifying an IP you are using that
also resolves to your hostname and fqdn.

Next time you change your host's name, change it there and also in
/etc/sysconfig/network to make it permanent (after next reboot).

Sometimes it is also useful to have "multi on" in /etc/host.conf
(especially for a multi-homed box). The man pages should give you
more scoop about this.

Now try gnome again, it might work after doing all that. And it
might also prevent other weird quirks also blowing up in your face
along the way.

Can you let me (us?) know if this does (or does not) fix the problem?
