Yes, but would not that functionality depend on the "package" tarket
specified in the Makefile?

Or is this a more general *BSD-specific thing?

There are many program tarballs that you do things like this with...
one that I've only done yesterday is "make rpm" with the
exmh-2.6.tar.gz sources, and the result was that three rpm packages
ended up in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/ all ready to be installed.
