One of my latest projects is playing with the simh emulator,
particularly using it to play with a PDP-11, running Unix v7.
(The relevant files are available as the "simh" and "pdp11-unix-v7"
Debian packages.)
I'm just doing this for the hell of it, but I thought it would be
amusing to see what one of these beasts would have been like. (I
justify this to myself by thinking "this could go on my resume"
whenever I feel guilty for wasting the time.)
However. The disk image provided is just absolutely *tiny*. 10 megs
is a little skimpy, so I thought I'd like to have a few extra "disks"
around for unpacking sources, etc etc. So my question is about how
the names of the disks map to the OS device names, and the exact
relative sizes thereof.
The pdp11 emulator documentation[1] says it supports the following
disks:
RX11/RX01 single density floppy disk 256KB
RX211/RX02 double density floppy disk 512KB
RK11/RK05 cartridge disk 2.5MB
RLV12/RL01-RL02 cartridge disk 5-10MB
RK611/RK06-RK07 cartridge disk 13-26MB
RH11-RH70/RM03, RM05 disk packs 67-256MB
RH11-RH70/RM80 non-removable disk 124MB
RH11-RH70/RP04 (RP05), RP06 disk packs 87-174MB
RH11-RH70/RP07 non-removable disk 516MB
RQDX3/RX50, RX33 floppy disks .4-1.2MB
RQDX3/RD51,RD52,RD53,RD54, RD31 disks 10.8-155.6MB
RQDX3/RA72,RA82,RA90,RA92 disks 608-1470MB
But it doesn't give a mapping of disk names to device names for Unix
v7. I think a couple of 10.8--155.6MB disks would do the trick.
Of course it isn't that simple, either; I still have to work out how
to compile the drivers in, and appropriate arguments to /etc/mkfs, and
so on, but I think I could do that by myself.
I've found it's remarkably difficult to search for this information
online. Does anyone know off the top of their head, or where to look
for more information?
