I set up wins support following your instructions. :)

In share mode, you can connect to each share as a different user, in user
mode you have to only connect as a single user to all shares.  I played
with security=user after your suggestion, but changed it back so I
wouldn't have to play with client machines.

Implemented these.

Something in the above solved the problems, but I did all your proposed
changes at once.  Everyone is happy, and commented on how well behaved the
server was today.
