I would second the vote for Kodak ... cameras at least.  I have a DC3400 and
it is more stable under Linux than it is under Windows.  In fact I regularly
reboot into Linux to download pictures from the camera (if I am not already
there :~)  ).  btw I used gphoto.

It's not clear here if you mean just the Kodak webcams, or their
digital cameras, too; I have access to a DX-3900 and it is *fabu*.
Works great through gtkam.
