It is just a dialup connection.

I did some more digging and I probably should have thought of it earlier but does Linux support my modem?  It is a Conexant HSF V92 56K PCI Modem.  I found http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO/modems.html which says that there is a good chance that it is a "winmodem".  Can anyone confirm or reject this as being the problem?
