Hi All,
I have just set up a dual boot machine with RH7.3 Linux.
The install went fine, no problems and everything appears to
be set up correctly - except there is a problem with surfing
and name lookups.
I have set up linux before and usually don't have a
problem with it, but this is the first time I have set up
RH7.3 and a few things are different and I suspect that the
problem is something that has changed since the last time I
did a RH install that I have missed (last time it was 7.0
BTW).
The Windoze side of the dual boot works fine, I can surf
the net, and do telnets by name and IP address. I have ruled
out a hardware fault and server/firewall fault because of
this (I have also had a version of Linux working on this
machine previously). The Linux side however shows some
strange behaviour. I can ping anywhere, so routing and
forwarding is working ok, but the only DNS lookups I can do
by name are to the server/firewall, the Telstra name servers
ns0.telstra.net and ns1.telstra.net and to a web site set up
on the server/firewall. All other lookups result in "Unable
to locate server, please check the server name and try
again."
I have checked all of the usual suspects for DNS faults
(hosts, hosts.allow, hosts.deny, routed.conf etc) but they
all seem correct. The network interface eth0 is set up
correctly and shows the correct DNS servers. ifconfig and
route -n also are correct. The RH installation guide
describes exactly what I did to set up the system on install
and the trouble shooting guide is of no help. The RH website
is also no help. I have exhausted all possibilities I know
of and still can't work this out, so the only thing I can
put it down to is something new I don't know about since
RH7.0 that is probably staring me right in the face but I
just can't see it. If anyone could help out it would be much
appreciated. TIA.
Cheers!
Andrew.
