Hi Peter.  What sort of connectionare you trying to setup?  Bigpond is a
board brandname that covers cable, adsl & dialup moden connections.

For cable, look at the tool bpalogin.

For adsl, look at rp-pppoe.

For modem, we'd need to look at the specific problems you're seeing.  As
for authentication, I think Telstra would use chap.  You can configure
pppd to try both chap & pap & put the authentication info in the right
spot to try both.
