Hi all,

Thanks for your responses, The solution was so easy and I learnt
something about dhcp servers. Below is the emails that I sent to
QSITE-LAN, There are a lot of schools out there that are starting to
included Linux servers in there server pool, mainly as a proxy, some are
doing some Linux desktops also.

Thanks

Paul.

Hi,

The debian server thinks it is getting a dynamic IP address, but it is
actually a static address that is allocated by the dhcp server. It makes
life even easier as all the static address (or non critical servers) are
allocated centrally.

In this way if I take it to another network (i.e. humbug) it will get an
IP that works on that network and I don't need to make any changes to
the interfaces config file.

The change I made was on the NT box here at school. When my DHCP server
(PDC) sees the unique card address (MAC address I presume, but NT
doesn't call it that) that from the Debian box it will allocate it the
x.x.x.11 address.

It is actually the same thing that happens with the IP leases that each
card has but in this case the lease never expires.

My PDC and BDC have static addresses of x.x.x.1 & x.x.x.2 and there is
am exemption in the DHCP server for the range x.x.x.1 to x.x.x.10 which
is the standard EQ Curriculum SOE build (I think)

Paul.

Surely your servers should have a static IP address? Makes life much
easier, especially with web servers and proxy servers! We simply assign
them a fixed IP address from a range that we determine and then take
that range out of the scope of the DHCP server. eg we have 10.192.0.x
for all our servers and 10.192.1.x for all other systems that get their
IP from the DHCP server.

BTW by unique ID do you meanthe MAC Address of the NIC?
