Sounds as though your method of rebooting did not give the X server 
enough time to exit cleanly.  Try removing /var/run/gdm.pid and see 
if gdm starts up properly.

If that fixes it, you might do well to include a line in your boot 
scripts to do it as a matter of course to prevent this problem from 
happening in the future.
