The "X respawning too fast" error is just a symptom of the other problem.

If init sees anything in /etc/inittab start more than 10 times in 5
minutes it assumes there is a problem & disables the entry for 5 minutes
to give the admin a chance to fix it.  If it is still broken when this
time is up it'll do it all over again.  This will continue until the admin
fixes or comments out the entry & HUPs init.

There have been some good suggestions on attacking the original problem.
