[ Worthwhile understanding: http://www.humbug.org.au/netiquette.html ]
This means that init is attempting to run GDM which gives you the X based
login dialog, but for some reason GDM is unable to run. Unfortunately there
could be many reasons for this, from some problem with the X server, to
problems with gdm itself and any of the myriad scripts involved in the
running of X.
Try the following....
1. Take a look in /var/log/gdm/* [1]
2. Comment out gdm in inittab and then attempt to start it manually using
'/etc/init.d/gdm start'
3. Try running X using 'startx'
Should be enough to get you on the right track
Cheers
Michael
