If you are running anti-spam software in your (per user) mail delivery
process, its a Good Idea to serialise the runs, usually via a a lock file
in your .procmailrc.  Similar mechanisms can be used if running such
software on a global basis.

You can also serialise Sendmail/MTA-of-choice itself to avoid this
problem in the first place.
