[H-GEN] can't log in

my boyfriend all of a sudden can't log into his machine in anything but 
single user mode. It says 'invalid user', but when he was still logged in 
and he typed su, it said 'module not found' or 'module not loaded' or 
something like that. it even tells him root is an invalid user when he 
tries to log in normally.

any help much appreciated.
