There should be a smbpasswd file somewhere under /etc on your system.
This file maps SMB users/passwords to UNIX users, if you have set samba
to use password encryption.  You need to use password encryption if you
are talking to Win98 or NT (> SP3 I believe) machines.  'man smbpasswd'
in sections 5 and 8 should help you here.
