Oops. I answered your first sentence without properly reading your post.
*sigh* reading hundreds of support requests does that to me.
As you say nscd and /etc/hosts together will allow you to achieve similiar
results to using DNS bandwidth wise. But why bother with two services when
you can use one? Also, why bother with an outmoded service (/etc/hosts)
when a mature replacement (DNS) is available?
