[ssh compression over ppp]

Well, vanilla ppp doesn't do any. There are various ppp hacks
(commercial and otherwise) that do this, but they can be a pain. You can
do VJ header compression, which is worthwhile, but won't have that much
effect on your main traffic.

In summary, if you've got the trick of it it's worthwhile.
