I'm told that pointing a browser/proxy/whatever at a local port and ssh
forwarding that port with compression over a modem to a remote proxy (hi
Nik... have i got that right?) will give a significant increase in
throughput for compressible data.

My question is: roughly how much extra compression will this give above the
compression that the modem hardware and ppp can provide? Anyone tried?

Charles.
