I think I did this:

 boot from a Linuxcare bootable business card(tm) :-)

 using cfdisk, make win95-fat32 (hda1), ext2(hda2) and
 linux-swap(hda5) partitions 

 boot from w19100 CD, install onto what it calls C:

 now install linux

 now install grub

I think I had that too; grub fixed it.

Isn't the boot code at 

  dd bs=512 count=1 skip=1

because the first sector is reserved for <mumble>?

Like you, I am just a programmer not a hardware geek.
