I've used the version from Debian Woody on several different x86
machines for several different platforms, and it seems to work really
well.  A simple

  # grub-install /dev/hda

got most of them going on the first try.

Also the plural of gnu is not gnus, as you might be led to believe,
but gun.  This is to avoid jokes like "No gnus are good gnus", "Here
are the gnus", etc.
