you can have as many partitions on a hard disk as you wish for. Linux will
address up to 63 of them.

'bootable' is a flag used in each partition that indicates that partition is
bootable for OS's that use it. Linux however does not use it and any partition
is bootable, defined solely by /etc/lilo.conf.
