i have seen stuff like that happen. i've got a m/b here that only has
one functional com port yet both ports are controlled by a single chip
[snip]
when you boot to linux(or *bsd) does the IDE detection code pickup either
the cdrom or the hdd on the 2nd IDE cont.
if not I'd say the controller or the cable is borked.
