If you're a C programmer, Java in a Nutshell (O'Reilly)
is pretty good.

Also consider doing some net searches.  A while back I
remember seeing an online tutorial that seemed quite ok.
I didn't bother keeping the URL though since I didn't
need it.

As a side issue: developing using Java under Linux is
very reasonable.  Your only real problem is a beta
version of JDK1.2 (Java 2), which does have some
drawbacks.
