BSD has a reputation for being more performant and stable in server
configurations. I think the best advice on choosing a distribution is
to use what your friends use so that they can help you. RedHat or
Debian or *BSD should be fine.
For web development these days I would configure something like 1 *
400MHz / 2 * 10GB IDE / 256MB.
You certainly want to look at PHP3 <http://www.php.org/> -- very
productive and easy to use Perl-like scripting language.
For more complex applications you should look at Zope
<http://www.zope.org/> or JServ <http://java.apache.org/>, in that
order. Zope has a very interesting model which is ultimately more
productive but perhaps harder to understand than JServ.
