O.K. - I've booted off the debian cdrom and figured out (from the help)
that at the boot: prompt that you can type
boot: root=/dev/hda6
which is where the linux fs is stored. Unfourtounatley it chokes on
loading the swap-space:

Activating swap...

Umm - I can get to the hdd by booting off the cdrom - and instead of
specifying where the root partition is, I can mount the root fs on /mnt
after booting off the cdrom. How do I re-run lilo after editing the
lilo.conf file to reflect the changes?

Cool - I think that the superblock is fine, however...
