There it is right at the end:

allen at sporty:/home/allen > strace sh -c xfreecd
<snip>
stat("/usr/share/locale/C/libc.cat", 0xbfffece8) = -1 ENOENT (No such
file or directory)
stat("/usr/share/locale/libc/C", 0xbfffece8) = -1 ENOENT (No such file
or directory)
stat("/usr/local/share/locale/C/libc.cat", 0xbfffece8) = -1 ENOENT (No
such file or directory)
<snip>

The locale "C" is a relic of KDE having been installed on this machine,
I believe, but changing that isn't going to help. "cd /usr; find -name
libc.cat" comes up with nothing. Is this likely to be a result of having
installed glibc-2.0.6 a while ago? I'm still trying to get my head
around the differences between libc.so.5 and libc.so.6 - I suspect I'm
about to understand something I didn't yesterday.

cheers

allen
