I have just run another make modules and make modules_install, and still do
not have these files anywhere. I have a funny feeling something has gone
seriously wrong here! :-)

When I run "make modules" all seems to go accroding to plan (no errors are
reported, at least). I then run "make modules_install" and get a number of
"Installing modules under /lib/modules/2.2.10/block" and similar lines,
which appears to say "It worked" to me!

When I take a look at /boot, I can see a module-info-2.2.5-15 file (which
module-info is linked to) but no module-info-2.2.10 file. Is this correct?

After doing these additional make modules and make modules_install steps,
when I try to run ppp-on (standard RH script) I still get the errors about
ppp-compress-xy (xy = 21, 24 and 26) not being found. In the
/lib/modules/2.2.10/net directory I have bsd_comp.o, dummy.o, eepro100.o
eql.o, ne2k-pci.o ppp_deflate.o and tulip.o files (a couple of modules for
NICs I may end up using in this box - maybe I should just recompile again if
I'm gonna change NIC???)

When I run "depmod -a", I get the following output:
/lib/modules/2.2.10/net/tulip.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.10/net/eepro100.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.10/net/ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.10/net/eql.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.2.10/net/dummy.o: unresolved symbol(s)
---(but notice no failures for bsd_comp or ppp_deflate)---
(and similar failures messages for /block/, /ipv4/ and /misc/ modules too.

Another thing that I have noticed is that when I try to run diald, I get
errors stating that SLIP is not compiled into the Kernel, therefore diald
will fail. I have included SLIP support in the kernel (recomipled after I
saw this error just for diald), but still get this error which causes diald
to fail. :-(

> The other way to fix these problems is to compile them into the kernel ;)

I would if I could see these options. Maybe make xconfig is a "Bat Thing"
(tm)?

Maybe I should just give up and go and play squash or something! :-) Only
joking!

It's just a bit frustrating. I'm gonna persevere, and I'm gonna get this
thing going. Unless you all get sick of questions, that is. (c:

Just in case you think I've made no progress so far, I have managed to
install RH6, get Samba running, move my modem from my Win98SE box to the
Linux box and get ppp running (kinda sorta). DNS and IP forwarding is
working between my two LANs (one is plain 100BaseTX, the other is plain
10BaseT - two small hubs) and IPchains is installed and configured(ish) to
protect my LANs from the "Internet Nasties" (tm). Squid is up and running
too. At one stage, autofs was even working (but is now broken for some
reason).

A word or warning, I'm going to try to get DHCP, diald and mail/news running
in the near future. As one particular Baden-Powell was noted for saying, be
prepared!

Regards,
Hilton
