I've never used anything but an internal modem mostly because
my hardware is hand-me down, but also because they're damn
handy and I've never had any trouble with them[1].
As for configuration, an internal modem is notionally a serial
port with a specialised connector. It is precisely as well-
supported as an external modem bundled with a new serial card. It's
already been pointed out that you should beware of the standard
problems associated with adding a new serial port (making sure
it doesn't conflict with your other serial ports, making sure
your hardware config supports it with PnP etc...), and the
standard problems with adding a new modem (making sure it's not
a damn winmodem, etc...). Other than that it's smooth sailing
and standard Hayes-compatable protocols.
Hell. Even MS-DOS supports internal modems straight out of the
shrinkwrap :) I used my first internal modem with DOS 3.3.
As for the general questions about which to buy, most modems these
days are ok. Don't ever think of getting anything that's
non-Austel-approved; they're illegal to hook up to phone lines.
Make sure your modem understands Australian dial and busy tones,
make sure it's fast enough for what you want, and otherwise go
for it. You only live once[2].

[1] I am aware of the horror stories, and can attest to some
authenticity that I've seen in other people's computers... but
I've somehow avoided the PC version of "Electric death".
[2] In other words... don't forget to also consider the problems
associated with internal modems in general. Unplug it during
thunder storms... don't leave your computer attached to the phone
line when it's cloudy and you're about to go out... :) That kind
of thing. Take every story of destruction with a pinch of salt,
but use it at entirely your own risk.
